I won't believe that 'Saint Nicholas' brings the world 'together' when one estimate of the percentage of the world's population which is 'Christian' is only 31%.

I think isthmus is a geographical term, like a somewhat narrow stretch of land connecting two larger masses. Society could be more appropiately said to be connected by a 'thread' instead, though at the present time it would appear more likely to be 'hanging by a thread'.
