money is a strange comodity samanyan.we can't do without it and at the same time at times any amount of it cannot bye u what u want.and i think man sees himself in god(as materialistic as man) and so the penny on the forehead of the one going for a journey to the heavenly abode.

Even i do not get the point in placing a coin on the dead person's forehead....a bizzare practice. As u said that god did not invent money, but since man knows nothing greater than money, he might of thought that placing that penny is a gesture of great respect! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
