Alacrity Is Anathema

Rating: 5.0

fine to have fast courts
that order convict to hang
but appeals do thwart;
mercy issue, often, pangs
conscience*, hence delay prolongs

with mercy appeals
when it comes to rejection
most Presidents feel:
'haste for the noose, I.should shun;
Is there a.humane.option? '

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
alacrity -speed and eagerness (to complete a task)
anathema-something that is strongly disliked or disapproved of: Cambridge Dictionary
Nirbhaya case16/12/2012- 4 convicts in death row have appealed for mercy, which is pending.
* Mercy appeals finally reach the President. Rarely do they reject such appeals.
This poem is in the context of the recent gruest sexual attack and murder of a young lady veterinarian in Hyderabad around 1st Nov 2019.
The culprits have been caught. There is a clamour that they should be hanged. We should note that there is a long process before the courts give the orders. Incase of death sentence, the convicts can seek mercy from President of India. The earlier case of Nirbhaya of 2012, the convicts in death row, have sought mercy and their petitions are pending actioni.e,7 years after the crime.
