Accents Poem by Mary Champion

Accents

Accents are the melodies of everyday speech,
the rhymes and the rhythms of our roots.
But now bland uniformity threatens to leach
all the character - see how it mutes
the subtle gradation of tone that you hear
as you travel through counties and states.
Drab homogenisation is costing us dear,
for monotony slowly conflates,
our whimsical accents and our singular brogues,
serendipitous tunes each employs.
Could we all speak like chat-bots as their power grows
and the music is drained from our voice?
