Aberfan 1966 Poem by Chris Zachariou

Aberfan 1966

an avalanche
of death slid
down the mountain

crying..
screaming..
choking..

voices fading

mummy

it's dark
it hurts
help me

their light goes out
Aberfan grows dim
and a taste of death
lingers in the town

innocence destroyed

now you pretend
there is no one there
may be you even
fooled me for a while

but I will find you

soon I will cross the river
I know your name
It's been written
in the book for years

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
In 1966 a badly maintained colliery spoil tip collapsed on the little town of Aberfan killing 144 people including 116 children. No one was ever prosecuted and punished for this horrendous crime as corporate manslaughter was not recognized as crime. The Coal Board was responsible for the maintenance of the pit. But the responsibility, in my view, lies much. much higher. I am still waiting for someone to explain to me why innocent people including little children have to die or to put it more bluntly why does the Will of any God includes suffering and death.
