A Wedding Announcement Produces No Great Displays Of Emotion Poem by Raj Dronamraju

A Wedding Announcement Produces No Great Displays Of Emotion

When I said I liked you, I meant it as deep as I could go
Where not one layer of anything else could find room
When you said the opposite back, it was delayed destruction
A crack in a crystal palace becomes thunderous breakage

And I saw the announcement of your wedding including photos of you with a frail and ghostly groom
And I thought of two different people talking about nothing serious
And those two people looked like us

But I am not telling half-truths nor making something sound bigger than it was nor am I reading too much into this
The foot is in a different shoe, one that fits well I hope
Unlike us who never tried anything on

And I have no emotion to offer for rejection and failure
Because it is so embarrassing and gross and trivial, it produces no emotion
If you feel emotion in this case, you are trivial
And expect too much from deliberately contrary free will
