Your poem takes me back to my childhood days when I was totally mesmerized by fairy tales.In many stories a king or angel was hidden under an ugly frog skin and later turned into handsome prince by the love of princess.But here in your poem a burglar turned toad.Nice one, much enjoyed.
Yes, there are many fine stories usually with a good moral message too. Here the villain gets his desserts. Even worse his wife doesn't seem that concerned either!

i'll go down to the pond in the morning and apologize to my frogs for taking their species in vain. And the tadders which still look sprightly. It's only a joke, I'll say. No doubt they'll reply.. croak, croak. If I see one in a striped jersey I'll let you know!

the burglar has the misfortune to try an burgle a witch's house. She turns him into a frog as a punishment. The joke is his wife's casual acceptance of his changed condition. That's all.
