A Soldier's Tale Poem by Amar Agarwala

A Soldier's Tale

Rating: 5.0

Did you know my countrymen
The travails of my fate?
My patriotic travails
Grim markings upon my slate.

I lived and died for your sake
To do my country proud,
I cared not for sufferings
Nor wanted a satin shroud.

I challenged every danger
I challenged every foe,
I stopped not till my last breath
It's something you did not know.

I let my blood flow freely
Upon some alien soil,
I never cared for trophies
Nor gifts for my gruesome toil.

I did miss my family
And my beloved too,
Sun-kissed days and home staid warm
Balmy skies an azure blue.

Yet, for sake of my nation
That it may safely stay,
I gave up my tomorrow
That you may be free today.

I seek no blossoms of you
I want no trophies tall,
I seek no wreaths nor candles
Neither a monument small.

All I seek is your wishes
And pious sentiment,
Shall adorn it in heavens
As my solemn sacrament.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
COME VISIT THE EMPIRES OF THE DEAD TODAY, FOR IT IS - 'REMEMBRANCE REMEMBRANCE DAY!

Remembrance Day (sometimes known informally as Poppy Day) is a memorial day observed in Commonwealth of Nations member states since the end of the First World War to remember the members of their armed forces who have died in the line of duty. Following a tradition inaugurated by King George V in 1919. The day is also marked by war remembrances in many non-Commonwealth countries.

Remembrance Day is observed on 11 November in most countries to recall the end of hostilities of World War I on that date in 1918. Hostilities formally ended 'at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month', in accordance with the armistice signed by representatives of Germany and the Entente between 5: 12 and 5: 20 that morning. ('At the 11th hour' refers to the passing of the 11th hour, or 11: 00 am.)

On this special day, I honour not just the soldiers who gave up their lives for our better tomorrow, but the dead, many of whom lie buried in cemeteries across the world, unknown and uncared for. Let us remember today, that the world we have today, was given to us by them. They left us a legacy... a gift, mankind is hell-bent on destroying.
