I prefer the free verse of Whitman to the prose excerpt you posted - Have you read the following? I hear America singing, the varied carols I hear, Those of mechanics, each one singing his as if it should be blithe and strong, The carpenter singing his as he measures his plank or beam, The mason singing his as he makes ready for work, or leaves off work, The boatman singing what belongs to him in his boat, the deckhand singing on the steamboat deck... Or this passage from Song of Songs - My lover is radiant and ruddy, outstanding among ten thousand. His head is purest gold, his hair is wavy and black as a raven. His eyes are like doves by the water streams, washed in milk, mounted like jewels.
