I've written lots of stories of people I have known.
I've told of things that really cannot be.
I've written of my love for you, of lands I'll never roam.
So now I'll write A Poem About Me.
There has always been a hero in every tale I tell
And you, of course, assume the hero's me.
But let me tell you plainly, you have never been more wrong.
I've never sailed upon a stormy sea.
I have never climbed a mountain, nor braved a desert storm.
I have never battled with a mountain troll.
I've never flown in rocket ships, nor fought the bitter snow,
Nor banished demons grappling for my soul.
The battles in my stories are just battles of the mind,
Battles every person wages like a war.
And the tales I tell are riddles, I have wrapped up in a rhyme
Disguised in parables and metaphor.
Metaphors are just for liars and poets, don't you know?
To sing in songs and make tall tales ring true.
And a poet's just a pirate who will steal your heart away.
With his words he lolls and hypnotizes you.
He'll rob the treasure in your heart with words men seldom say.
He'll talk to you of worlds he's never seen.
He'll build your dreams and wishes, and then watch them fade away.
To make you go where he has never been.
And the hero in his fables, should you take the proffered bait,
And accept his dare, no matter win or lose,
Is the reader of his stories for he hopes that, soon or late,
His magic words will change which path you choose.
Thus, I've whispered you a secret and now send you on your way
With words as plainly spoken as can be.
And I've written my last poem and I've uttered my last rhyme.
And I've now written A Poem About Me.
This poem has not been translated into any other language yet.
