A Nod To Musicals Poem by Sheena Blackhall

A Nod To Musicals

Yesterday I was Singin' in the Rain
I think, because I heard The Sound of Music

A Funny Girl told me a West Side Story
About some Fair Lady, An American in Paris

Meet Me in St. Louis, she told me, On 42nd Street.
All That Jazz doesn't wash with me, I replied

The Cabaret is wonderful, she coaxed
Every Yankee Doodle Dandy wears a Top Hat

I prefer Chicago, I argued. A Star Is Born
There every day On the Town
You could get on The Band Wagon there

I went on a dating App, she said
It quoted a success story: Seven Brides for Seven Brothers
The advert said Guys and Dolls on a Show Boat

I've heard about thoseapps, I warned
A case of Beauty and the Beast
You should widen your interests, Italy perhaps, Mama Mia!
Or France, to study Les Misérables in the Moulin Rouge
Or you might study gastronomy at Willie Wonka's factory
Perhaps you like ghost tales? The Phantom of the Opera
Is highly recommended. Or Sweeney Todd if murder's more your line

I know two children you might like to meet
Annie and Oliver, though the boy is covered in Grease,
The great unwashed, the sad mark of poverty.
The girl though, is quite the fantasist
She refers to a Wizard of Oz as her legal guardian
And often speaks of The King and I, as if she was royal
On the plus side, she's very fond of Cats
