I feel glad that you read this poem and appreciated the same. Thanks for your kind words, Dear Friend.
i've left comments in four sections. i hope they all show up. bri ;)
I've read this fine review running into four sections and feel grateful for putting up info which each one of us should know before forming an opinion about the issue under reference. Since you have read it very closely, you must have noticed that I have never used the name of a country as attacker (though, howsoever obvious) . The number of people who died in Hiroshima soon after the attack was shown and it was only illustrative.
Just around that time even Japan, Germany and USSR were also at the verge of developing nuclear devices. It was only a matter of time as to which side could use it first. So, it is not fair to blame any country but the purpose was to highlight the damage that WMD are capable of inflicting. I didn't mean to hurt the sentiments of my respectable friends.
4 - Let's not forget that the U.S. helped to restore Japan after the surrender, according to some. Weapons are used by people; the bomb was not a monster (in my opinion) . My Japanese wife's mom left Nagasaki (I believe) before the second bomb was dropped) . The U.S. helped feed my wife when she was a kid in grade school in the 1950s. bri :)
3 - A few statistics do NOT tell the whole story. For some countries during WW2, more civilians were killed than military members. Does Japan not have some responsibility for its aggression in China and at Pearl Harbor? ? Some have said that the dropping of " Little Boy" and " Fat Man" on Japan saved more military & civilian lives for Japan and the " Allies" /U.S., as it caused Japan to surrender.
2 - AND: " Casualties in selected U.S. divisions. The total dead or missing were 41,592 for all U.S. Army ground troops in the Pacific and southeast Asia, with another 145,706 wounded. The Marine Corps and attached Navy corpsmen suffered total casualties of 23,160 killed or missing and 67,199 wounded."
1 - what do i believe? Poem? or Wikipedia? ? " The bombs immediately devastated their targets. Over the next two to four months, the acute effects of the atomic bombings killed between 90,000 and 146,000 people in Hiroshima and 39,000 and 80,000 people in Nagasaki; roughly half of the deaths in each city occurred on the first day."
A very powerful indictment of the American bombing of Hiroshima. August,1945 was a dark day in history but the Japanese have recovered well. A landmark poem.
Thanks, Michael, for this precise overview of the poem. You were the first one to read and review the poem when it first appeared nearly eleven months ago.
That was the starting of Baptizing little monster boy. Since then many are born and lurking everywhere. let's just hope and pray that they are kept under leash and parents of these devils do not lose their own senses. thank you for sharing this always much needed reminder.
I fully endorse your views. Let us hope that all such arsenals ' are kept under leash' so that the real children of Mother Earth do not have face this kind of annihilation ever. Thanks, Savita ji, for a very thoughtful review of the poem.
What a stain that day left on human history! By remembering it, we are confronted with our fatal flaw that turns human ingenuity toward violent, merciless ends. Let us hope that humanity can continue to grow in moral stature as well as in technical prowess.
You have rightly observed 'our fatal flaw that turns human ingenuity toward violent, merciless ends'. It is reassuring that no country has ever tried to press the nuclear button despite provocation from rival sides. There is better climate for exchange of views which restrains all misadventures being undertaken. Thank you, Denis, for such a fine review.
A heart-touching poem to be chosen as Poem of the Day! The name of the Nuclear Bomb was such an irony, but perhaps the inventor never imagined his invention to be used in such a horrific way! A great piece dedicated to the innocent victims! Thank you, Dear Poet!
The precise review done by you brings into focus the basic concerns facing mankind in the wake of lethal weapons of mass destruction possessed by powerful countries.
Thank you, Banamala ji, for your visit and for kind words about the poem.

(Part-ii) Perhaps the father of Nuclear bomb had never expected that his invention would cause such destruction to human society. Many congratulations for this well deserving poem selected as the Poem of the Day!
You have really done a very fine review of this poem- meticulous and emotive. I sincerely thank you, Bharati Ma'am, for the review and for all the appreciation.
It's sacrilegious to have had the monster baptised Little Boy. What crazy mentality! Rajnish, your very fine tribute leaves the reader with an everlasting imprint. Belated Congratulations on POD!
