In this poem I think that Emily Dickinson is suggesting that, although a remark may seem innocuous, ' a quiet thing', it can nevetheless be the fuse which lights a fire. It can be the vital spart to hitherto unrealised meanings and possibilities. I think in the second stanza Dickinson is perhaps referring to war. Language has a power to change and alter states of being, even a remark that sounds like a throw away quip, can have a power of lightning if taken the wrong way. Another fabulous observation from one of the greatest poets of the medium.
