Good one Kim. As a fan of the Duke, I've pilgrimaged to his birthplace in Winterset, Iowa a few times. I recommend it to every fan. Thanks for remembering him.
Winterset, Iowa? Sounds cold for some reason. I'll try to remember that the next time I travel though Iowa. Thanks, Smoky.
I actually knew that John Wayne's given name was Marion. An excellent poem, with great rhyming.
when i think of big Hoss.. i think of the Ponderosa, when i think of big boss i think, ....i think, .... i think... i have no rhyme but Sammy Sosa!
:) I didn't know John Wayne's real name was Marion Michael (or Robert) Morrison.. and - although I'm late - congrats for having it selected as member poem of the day!
Thanks to poems like this, I learn trivia about people like John Wayne, not in vain, I hope. My ID is a gender-free number of ten digits.
Congrats on Member poet of the Day, I'm very happy for you Lisa
A unique as well as rather uncommon theme to find in poetry. Still, interesting and valuable one. Thank you for sharing.
My favorite movie of his was The Quiet Man..with Maureen O'Hara..always loved The Duke....thank you for your tribute poem to him.. a ten..
Both near and far! ! Thanks for sharing this poem with us.
Great poem. I bet I'm not the only one that didn't know this. Thanks for sharing and congrats!
I've always known this about the Duke, since my name is Francis Marian (yes, an a and not an o) , Marian being my middle name. I was born in the first Marian year declared by the Pope, and the rest is history. My daughter was born in the second Marian year, and thus, her middle name is Marian. Nice poem.
Kim, Congrats, It does bring back many memories and I enjoy watching his movies to this day.! !
Thanks for sharing this lovely, informative poem...Congrats on being poet of the day!
Keeping aside the controversy around the name Marion, this is an excellent poem and a wonderful tribute to a legendary actor. Thanks a lot.
Heartiest Congrats for inking an outstanding portrait of Marion and on it's selection as Poem of the Day.
You know, Kim, I always think of that Johnny Cash song A man called Sue when I think of John Wayne. From his beginnings in Stagecoach John proved he could act and his tremendous performance in True Grit proved that. He was also a humorous guy and had a warm personality beneath that tough guy image. Big hero. Big man! Great piece of writing, Kim. Congrats on poem of the day. One of the best!
Thanks, Tom. I think the poem (song) you mean is A Boy Named Sue. Did you know that was written by one of my favorite poets, Shel Silverstein?
Congratulations on a Poem of the Day. This is a gem. I'll always remember Marion as Genghis Khan.
And I'll probably remember him best as Rooster Cogburn or one of his other Western roles. Thanks for your comment. I don't think I ever saw him as Genghis Kahn.
Marvelous piece...... great presentation.... thank u.
