A Light Inside The Heart, That Is Always On* Poem by Mohammad Younus

A Light Inside The Heart, That Is Always On*

A light inside the heart, that is always on,
the light of the heavens and the earth.
Your heart, like a niche holding a lamp,
the lamp encased in crystal,
the crystal gleams like a shining star—
lit from the oil of a blessed olive,
neither of the east nor the west.
Its oil would almost glow
without being touched by fire.
Light upon light!
Allah guides whoever He wills
to His light,
perfect in knowledge of all things.

Yet, the glass shards of this lamp—
you have shattered,
left with only the filament—
still glowing, as you need to know.
The wisdom tells you, you need this light.
In its absence, darkness wraps you;
you can barely see the truth—your essence.

There's a light inside your heart—
always turned on.
No one else can give you its shine.
Wear this light as a crown on your soul;
it endures, shifts in hues, sacred designs—
but it is yours alone.

Eat, sleep, play—do what humans do.
Yet always, you will miss—what true light is.
For the world inside you burns too bright,
while you, yourself, grow dim.
Your mind denies the lamp your soul knows—
it glows. You have to feel it,
for the beguiling nafs blinds you.

Open your divine eyes to see—
to let wisdom spark from the light within.
There's a light inside your heart,
steady, radiant.
It is no dream—it does not vanish.
Even the winds cannot snuff it out.

To restore your insight, enlightened be—
this is the Primordial light, the eternal reality.
But know, to be one with this light—
you must go beyond yourself, escape
the dark clouds, and let rainbow radiance—
shine from your eyes—a light that never dies.

There's a light inside your heart—always on,
and it waits for you.
