I can see a flickerin' flutter, And I know what it's about. There's a light on in the attic.....brilliantly expressed.

A very simple poem, a monologue to the loved one, who departed long back, seemingly. "The dark and shuttered house" is the heart of the poet/narrator, who reminisces her love. It is this eternal love that is metaphored as a flickering light, shedding light on his life.

This poem has a deep meaning for me. I think it is speaking about a loved one who has died and whose influence is there for eternity.

For the life of me I never understood why Shel Silverstein was ever taken seriously as a poet. His verse is simplistic to the point of moronic and lends a great deal to the argument of free verse poetry being the refuge of inferior poets and poetry.

I read this poem September of last year and now again today. One can only know what its about if they have experienced it themselves. He recognizes a kindred soul in someone who is yet to wake up to it themselves.
