A Legend Lives Amongst Us Poem by Job Ombati

A Legend Lives Amongst Us

'J.O.J., tuko pamoja! '
Goes on this trademark voice,
Week after week on KBC.
Years have battered it -
40 years and counting.
What's remained?
'Zilizopendwa',
A clear voice; shaky though,
But determined as ever.

'J.O.J., hapo iko sawa! '
The voice staggers on.
In the other studio -
Same radio,
'Yours truly for the asking'
Swaggers on.
John Obongo Jr. - the sundowner
Is entertaining millions.
Dolly parton's
'Think about love',
The Everly Brothers' 'Ebony eyes',
Play in sweet succession.
What rare a chance!

Many before him,
Were here -
Job Mwamuto,
Tony 'Sheki Legi' Msalame
Elizabeth 'shabalikheri' Obege...
But like the foolish virgins,
Kenyans took no note,
Till the startling news came,
'The legendary 'Jee Huu Ni Uhungwana? ' has slept! '

Mbotela and Onyango Joel,
As many other galant soldiers:
Wielders of the sword,
Mighty slingers,
True sons of the land,
Gave purple service.
And Mother Kenya smiled.
