A Horseman Poem by Matt Mooney

A Horseman

Yesterday
the saddled white horse up ahead
led the cortège of our cavalier
across the town square.

Sadly
after a stormy night
swept away by the raging river
in the bright early morning
the baker tall and debonaire
who loved horses
walking home from work alone.

Today
Ballygrennan Hill
looks down benignly
on a calm and peaceful scene
but inside no matter what you see
hearts are grieving for him.

In tears
Gortnaminch
sends lace curtains
of rain blowing in
across the Island Racecourse
greedy crows cawing in chorus
in fields bare after baling.

Below
on the river bank
between Lofty's and the Market
wild roses in the briar and bushes
among the ash and elder
seem to wave their adiós
in the summer breeze.

A blackbird's song lingers on.
