Having friends who were soldiers in WWIo, in Iraq. I saw then experience what this poem describes so powerfully. Ray could not bring himself to talk about liberating a concentration camp
I my opinion A German Requiem stands as one of the finest achievments in post WW2 poetry.
It was too painful even after 50 years.
