I remember the middle of it as: Let us fly said the flea, let us flee said the fly'.

I thought the last line went; " So off they flew though a flaw in the flue."

In " Learning English 1" , an old German Schoolbook, there was a somewhat different version: A fly and a flea were in a flue. They were in prison, so what could they do? Said the fly, " let us flee! " Said the flea, " Let us fly! " So they flew with the flow out of the flue.

This is one of the best poems ever written, in my opinion. What we notice first, of course, is the clever word-play based on words that have similar sounds.. Did I say clever? It's beyond clever. Far beyond. But there's more. So much more. In just five lines, this poem gives us all the elements of a good story, such as characters, conflict, dialogue, rising action, falling action, denouement. Perfect. Ogden Nash is always good. Here, he's great!

I don't think that this is by Ogden Nash, though it is commonly attributed to him online. I compiled an index of Nash's poems years ago for a book I never published, and I have not been able to find the poem anywhere in Nash's books. I think this is another masterpiece by that genius called Anonymous.

flue a duct for smoke and waste gases produced by a fire, a gas heater, a power station, or other fuel-burning installation. no air rises up the chimney, usually because the flue is blocked
