A Dreadful Couplet Poem by John Yaws

A Dreadful Couplet

Shallow feeling, deep despair-
How I hate that dreadful pair...
Although you may not understand
The two of them go hand in hand.
Shallow feelings sponsor lies-
You find too late, to your surprise
The vows of love and that "forever"
All too soon, rescind to "never".
Artistic fool, the poets know-
Poor, mad Edgar Allen Poe
The tapping at the sill or door-
The wretched cry of, "Nevermore".
Nevermore to wear a smile-
Conscience ever more defiled-
Despair so deep one cannot sound-
Nor bottom of the slough is found..
Death is close upon you stealing
All because of shallow feeling.
