A Dose Of Medication Poem by Paula Glynn

A Dose Of Medication

He lies in bed in a fierce fever
The year 1640 Middle Age England
Ancient England different to the modern world
Technology primitive making life difficult
Bleeding a prescribed treatment for sickness.

His forehead to be brutally burning up
Holding onto a girl friend's hand: just a friend
Tossing and turning in fever waiting for it to end
A cool towel laid across his forehead
Doctors saying it'll take time and patience to get better.

Waiting for the boy's fever to break
Waiting for the boy's core temperature to lower
And reduce the feverish sweating
The boy's forehead burning up as the girl prays
Having caught the sickness from somewhere on the farm.

The boy a poor and young 16 year old farm worker
Having recently come to the farm from a troubled family
Looking for labour work to pay for a daily meal
The boy needing shelter and food
The boy luckily meeting a very pretty girl.

The girl instantly taking a strong liking
The boy 16 years old and very handsome
Their chemistry instant when their eyes connect
They two taking their time to get to know each other
Knowing to wait until marriage before taking things beyond a kiss.

For girl and boy do have a connection
Each other they do especially select
They have a bond: each other they do protect
Their work on the farm hard but worthwhile
And they stay working because they are soulmates.

The boy hardly thinking, a glass of water needing drinking
The fever taking over as he tosses and turns
His body that does painfully burn
His awareness only of the fierce fever
The girl told by doctors only time is the cure.

But that day comes: the boy's fever breaks
His recovered breath he does tentatively take
The girl feeling happiness and sheer relief
Never again taking the now-recovered boy for granted
Their now romantic relationship enchanted.

Everyone on the farm relieved the boy has recovered
Finding out he and the girl will one-day be married
And on that day they do wildly celebrate
Everyone happy for them and everyone glad for them
Everyone realizing how precious and vulnerable life is,

For she did wear her beautiful white wedding dress
And he did wear his handsome and smart black tux
Their wedding vows said in church magical
Their future together magical: their connection destiny
Two people to always love and protect.
