A Certain Elegance Pervades Poem by Mary Angela Douglas

A Certain Elegance Pervades

A certain elegance pervades
Old theatres of the American stage
Who knows what eloquence thundered there
Mystique and fancy blended there
The ghost of Ichabod Crane
A Maytime sweet declaiming
Of what was then so currently reigning
Why do my thoughts though
Scattered though they be
Only return to the one
Beyond all the once upon
Where Lincoln was shattered. ambushed
Heedless of the dire warning in his dream.
I cannot for the life of him flgure
How plays went on there to this day
In that theatre where he was slayed.
How no one thinks this strange.
