A Tea-Leaf Reading
September 2023

I once went to a tea-leaf reading
didn't know what to expect.
It was a bit eerie, drinking the tea,
net curtains fluttering, but no wind.

The cup now almost empty
save a dozen or so tea leaves,
the reader swirled the dregs around.
‘Well', she said,
'I can see good fortune awaits,
a happy life, marriage, children'.
'That's it'.

'What do you mean, that's it,
that could be for anyone'
I replied disappointedly,
thinking she would map my life out.
'Yes, that is you,
go and look for your own future,
see what you can achieve'.

I left, a lesson learned,

Unforeseen Circumstances

Strange -
a good while ago
on Brighton Beach promenade,
walking by the Fortune Teller's hut
a notice stand stood outside
stating -

Closed
Due to unforeseen circumstances

We did have a laugh!

their spent once lush green leaves
lay brown, crisp and crumpled
beneath their naked boughs

are calm and friendly
sparkling and glistening
in the unending sunshine
on this cloudless day

Old People on a Train
November 2023

Struggling up and over carriage step,
limping slowly down the isle
till a welcome empty seat is seen,
plopping down exhausted,
resting, resting till strength returns
to carry out their day's adventures

The Emergency Room

Entered by so many
all seeking urgent attention
whether a sore thumb
or a more serious issue,
hoping to be cured,
waiting patiently,
happy when their number called.

Winter Approaches

Winter approaches,
takes its natural toll.
trees bare, no greenery to dress,
skeletal branches
stretched to naked twigs.

A Child's Shrill Cry at Night

A child's shrill cry is heard
at dead of night.
What image has been dreamed
to give such fright?

The Sun Beams Across the Sky

The sun beams across the sky
but how long may it be nigh?
Clouds, perhaps will gather soon
bringing teardrops to all below.

An unpredicted damp start
transformed to a slow drizzle,
moving to unrelenting rain
for a miserable wet afternoon
