A Battle Within Poem by April Humason

A Battle Within

Rating: 5.0

My mind is a dark dirty jail,
Where happiness is locked away, frail.
Sadness covers my pale face,
Shattering the smile I once wore with grace.

In every emotion, darkness looms,
A cloud of gloom that never blooms.
Failing to see the light's warm glow,
Lost in the shadows, I wander low.

To feed off others' happiness, I impale,
A desperate attempt to set sail.
In a fairytale version, I portray,
A mask of smiles that don't convey.

Yet truth remains buried deep,
A secret that I must keep.
Unveiling it, a fear I meet,
Hell's flames dancing at my feet.

Heaven, a fingernail's length away,
Hope whispers for a brighter day.
So I exhale, my battles I face,
In this war within, I find my grace.

With every breath, another day,
A chance to find a different way.
In the darkness, a light I'll ignite,
To guide me through the darkest night.

A philosophical piece reflecting the hypocrisy of a man's existence. Parts of self warring with each other. 'sadness covers my pale face shattering the smile' and no 'light because darkness gloom's in every emotion I feel'.
