He went to a distant land far from home
to defend the freedoms he believed in
though he was thousands of miles from home
he never betrayed his country
He never wavered in his duties
carrying them out during the fiercest combat
even when his comrades were being killed around him
he didn't abandon his country
When he was shot and injured
having to be sent back to be treated
he still wanted to carry out his duties
he didn't give up on his friends or country
When he got home he was largely ignored
aside from a medal or two given by an ungrateful nation
not given the assistance he urgently needed
ended up on the streets cold and alone
a pitiful hungry beggar wrapped in blankets
betrayed and abandoned by the country
he swore to protect and serve
