This is exceptional, Michael. A literary, cinemascopic account of English life in the 20th century from the Edwardian days through to the war. The lines above are quintisentially pre-Thatcherite middle, class embodying the idea of get rich slow. He seems almost a Captain Manwairing figure in that sense. The recurring sepia evokes the time beautifully and the Home Counties pronunciation of 'gel' is utterly charming. The best of all your poems I've seen.
