Anwar Hussain Farooqui Biography

Anwar Hussain.S.Farooqui, resident of Vijaypur, Karnataka was born at Tajpur in Vijaypur. He was a matriculate who portrayed himself as a man of letters, a great litterateur of his time in Vijaypur. His poems are lucid which had an immense impact on the reader by their thought provoking content couched in a devotional vein.His father Sharif-ul-Hassan was a noted hakim, practitioner of Unani medicine and a scholar. He was a very pious and virtuous man and by and large his days were spent in mosques and dargahs and in the service of the religion.The Farooqui family traces its family tree to Hazrat Umar Farooqui (R.A.) , the second Caliph and thus the family is called Farooqui. The poet Anwar Hussain was well versed in Persian, Urdu and English Languages. Philosophy and Mysticism were his favorite subjects and he wrote poems in Urdu, Persian and English. On the occasion of the coronation ceremony of the prince of Iran, he wrote a poem in English and Persian and sent it to the king of Iran and acclaimed fame.As an acclaimed English Poet of Vijaypur, he was honored and invited as a guest at functions and lectures. Anwar Hussain Farooqui published his book of poems VOICE FROM HEAVEN in 1957 which is a great gem in the Indian English poetry. Besides writing he devoted his time for preparing Unani medicine and giving it away to those who needed it the most. He always helped the poor and the needy. A hakim in his own right, he prepared a tooth powder which he named Rhino and this product was hailed as an effective means of dental care. Anwar Hussain Farooqui, in modern jargon, may be called a job hopper.To start with, he served in the British airforce, then he joined the police force and finally he worked as a rationing inspector. The great poet of Vijaypur Anwar Hussain Farooqui passed away on 5th November 1969 leaving behind his letters, the precious book of poems VOICE FROM HEAVEN and a manuscript of unpublished poems. The second edition of his poems was posthumously published by his sons and his grandsons that include the first edition along with the unpublished poems.
